Jeff Cooper, the father of modern defensive shooting, famously said, "Owning a handgun doesn’t make you armed any more than owning a guitar makes you a musician." This statement perfectly encapsulates the necessity of training when it comes to responsible firearm ownership. Simply purchasing a gun is not enough, you must develop the skills needed to handle it effectively, safely, and responsibly.
Defensive shooting is more than just hitting a target; it’s about preparing for real-world scenarios where your ability to react under stress can mean the difference between life and death.
Why Defensive Shooting Training Matters
Defensive shooting is distinct from recreational target shooting. While the latter focuses on precision and controlled conditions, defensive shooting is about quickly and accurately engaging threats in unpredictable situations. It trains you to react to danger, maintain situational awareness, and make split-second decisions.
At Viking 6 Tactical, we offer a progressive training system designed to help gun owners at every level develop these essential skills.
Firearm Training Levels at Viking 6 Tactical
Defensive Pistol (Intro) – In-Home Training
This introductory class is designed for individuals who do not yet own a firearm, are considering purchasing one, or have minimal experience. Conducted in the comfort of your home, this 2-hour PowerPoint and hands-on class uses training firearms, simulators, and laser trainers. It allows students to build confidence and learn the fundamentals of dry-fire training, an essential practice that improves performance on the range and in real-life defensive situations.
This course can be taken multiple times, with instruction tailored to each participant’s skill level. If you're just starting, this class will set you up for success before you ever step foot on a range.

Training is a Continuous Process
Defensive firearm training is not a one-time event, it’s a continuous journey. Each level builds upon the previous one, reinforcing critical skills and preparing you for the realities of self-defense.

As Jeff Cooper said, "You are no more armed because you are wearing a pistol than you are a musician because you own a guitar."
